Waiting for your IELTS score can feel almost as stressful as sitting the test itself. If you took IELTS with IDP, you can check your IELTS IDP results online once your scores have been released.
However, it is important to know when your results should appear, what information you need to enter, and the difference between the score shown online and your official Test Report Form. This guide walks you through the process step by step and explains what you can do after receiving your IELTS result.
What are IELTS IDP results?
IELTS IDP results are the scores you receive after taking an IELTS test administered through IDP. Your result includes an individual band score for each of the four language skills and an Overall Band Score.
Your score report contains:
- Listening Band Score
- Reading Band Score
- Writing Band Score
- Speaking Band Score
- Overall Band Score
IELTS uses a 0–9 band scale, and scores may be reported in whole or half bands, such as 6.0, 6.5, 7.0 or 7.5.
One important distinction is that the result displayed through the online IDP results checker is considered provisional. Your Test Report Form (TRF), which may be issued in paper or digital form depending on the test centre and test type, serves as the official record of your IELTS result.
Therefore, viewing your score online is useful for checking your performance quickly, but you should follow the requirements of the university, employer, immigration authority or other organisation receiving your score when submitting official evidence.
When are IELTS IDP results released?
The release time depends mainly on the way your IELTS test is delivered. For test takers in Vietnam, computer-delivered IELTS is particularly relevant because standard IELTS tests in the country have been delivered on computer since 29 March 2025.
The general result-release periods are:
| Test type | Expected result time |
| IELTS on computer | About 1–5 days |
| IELTS on paper | Up to 13 days |
| IELTS for UKVI | About 1–5 days |
| IELTS for UKVI Life Skills | Up to 9 days |
IELTS states that computer-based results are normally available within 1–5 days. IDP Vietnam also notes that many computer-based results are available in approximately two days, although some may take up to five days.
For candidates taking standard IELTS with IDP in Vietnam, this means you will generally be checking a computer-delivered test result rather than waiting for the traditional paper-test release period.
Your exact release time may still vary, so avoid assuming that your result has been delayed simply because another candidate who tested around the same time has already received theirs.
How to check IELTS IDP results online
Checking your IELTS score through IDP is a straightforward process. Before you start, prepare the identification document that you used when registering for your test.
Step 1: Open the IDP IELTS results checker
Go to the official IDP IELTS “Check your result” page.
Make sure you are using the IDP results service rather than an unofficial score-checking website. The result checker is intended for candidates who took their IELTS test through IDP.
Step 2: Enter your personal information
The IDP results form asks you to provide identifying information such as:
- Given name
- Surname
- Date of birth
- Passport number or ID number
The date-of-birth field uses the DD/MM/YYYY format on the IDP result checker.
Your passport or ID number should be the same document number used when registering for IELTS. Using another passport, an updated identification number or information that does not match your registration record may prevent the system from finding your result.
For Vietnamese names, pay particular attention to how your given name and surname were entered during registration. Do not automatically rearrange your name based on how you normally write it in Vietnamese; follow the information recorded in your IELTS application.
Step 3: Review the information carefully
Before submitting the form, check your:
- spelling of your name
- date of birth
- identification number
- surname/given-name order
Even a small mismatch can cause the system to return no result.
Step 4: View your IELTS IDP results
After the system verifies your information and your result has been released, you should be able to view your band scores.
You will normally see your scores for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, together with your Overall Band Score.
Remember that the online display should not be treated as a substitute for an official TRF where formal proof of your result is required.
How to understand your IELTS IDP results
Seeing four separate scores and an overall score can be confusing if this is your first IELTS test. The key principle is that each skill is assessed separately, while your Overall Band Score is calculated from all four skill scores.
How is the Overall Band Score calculated?
IELTS calculates the Overall Band Score by taking the average of your Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking scores. The result is then rounded according to the IELTS band-scoring system.
Example: If your scores are Listening 7.0, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.5 and Speaking 7.0, the average is 6.75, which gives an Overall Band Score of 7.0.
This is why your overall result may not be identical to any single skill score.
You should also avoid focusing only on the overall number. Universities, professional organisations and immigration programmes may set minimum requirements for individual skills as well as an overall requirement.
Example: An applicant with Overall 7.0 may still need to improve Writing if a particular programme requires at least 6.5 in every component.
IELTS itself does not use a universal “pass” or “fail” score. Whether your result meets your needs depends on the requirements of the organisation or programme you are applying to.
Why are my IELTS IDP results not showing?
If your result does not appear when you search for it, there is no need to assume immediately that something is wrong. Several common situations can prevent a result from being displayed.
- Checking too early: Computer-delivered IELTS results can take up to five days, so the result may simply not have been released yet.
Incorrect personal information: Your name, date of birth or ID/passport number may not exactly match your registration information.
Given name and surname entered incorrectly: This can be particularly easy to overlook when Vietnamese naming order differs from the fields used on an international registration form. - Additional result checks: IELTS may occasionally take additional time to complete quality, identity or test-integrity checks before releasing a result.
If the normal result window has passed and you still cannot access your score, check your email and candidate information first. You can then contact the IDP test centre where you took the test for assistance.
What should you do after receiving your IELTS result?
Receiving your score is not necessarily the end of the IELTS process. Your next step should depend on whether the result meets the requirement you are working towards.
First, compare both your Overall Band Score and individual skill scores with the requirements of your university, scholarship, employer or immigration pathway.
If the score meets the stated requirement, follow that organisation’s instructions for submitting or electronically sharing your official IELTS result.
If you believe a score does not reflect your performance, you may consider an Enquiry on Results (EOR), which is a request to have one or more test components re-marked. IDP states that an EOR should be requested within six weeks of the test date. If a band score changes after the review, the EOR fee is refunded.
Candidates who are eligible may also consider IELTS One Skill Retake when they need to retake only one component rather than sitting all four skills again. The updated Test Report Form shows the retaken skill score together with the other three scores from the original test.
Before choosing either option, check whether the institution or organisation receiving your score accepts the relevant result type.
How long are IELTS IDP results valid?
IELTS results are generally used for two years from the test date, because language ability can change over time. IDP Vietnam similarly states that IELTS results can be verified within this two-year period.
This is worth considering when planning applications. Taking IELTS too early may mean your result reaches the end of the usual two-year validity period before you need to submit it.
At the same time, individual organisations determine their own score-acceptance policies, so always check the requirements of the institution receiving your IELTS result.

Checking your IELTS IDP results is simple once you have the correct registration information and know when your score is expected to be released. After receiving your result, look beyond the Overall Band Score and check each skill against the requirements of the programme or organisation you plan to apply to.

Can I check IELTS IDP results using only my name?

The online score display is provisional. Your Test Report Form or eTRF, where available, serves as the formal record used to confirm your IELTS result.
